“I hate it here. I’m bored. Everything smells weird. I want to go back to California.”
“So do I, Kether. Is your room unpacked?” Jin replied without looking away from the books he was unpacking.
“Yes. Kind of. Can I go to the park, Dad?”
He stopped and at his son. “I don’t think there is a park. We’re pretty far out from civilization.”
“Then where do I play?”
Jin set down the books in his hand. “Follow me.” He led Kether downstairs from their apartment and out onto the porch that wrapped around the building. He pointed to the field behind the house, and the woods beyond.
“There, Kether. You play there.”
For a minute Kether looked confused, and then his eyes widened and he smiled. “All of it?”
“Just promise me you won’t get lost. Or killed. Come back when it gets dark.” Kether had already run off by the time he finished the last sentence.
Jin watched him go, and stayed there long after he’d disappeared from sight beyond the tree line.
