Another Scene About Moving

“I don’t want to move to America,” Keiki complained.
“I thought you were going to practice your English,” her father asked. He’d taken her out to the Hard Rock Cafe in Tokyo, figuring it might help her get ready for the transition, but she’d been in a bad mood for the entire meal.
“My English is fine. I’ll have to practice it all the time soon enough.” She poked at her french fries.
He watched her for a long minute, and finally decided he couldn’t just keep leaving her alone with her thoughts. “Are you upset your mother didn’t make it?”
“No. She’s always busy.”
“Then?”
“What do you expect? You’re moving me to yet another country where I have to start over again. I have friends here, even if you don’t like them. Minako-”
He cut her off; he didn’t want to have another argument about whether or not Minako was a good influence. “Do you remember Helen Eberly?”
“From London? Yeah.”
“Her father’s the one who talked me into coming out there. So you’ll know somebody.”
Keiki considered it. “I haven’t talked to Helen in years.”
“Maybe you should change that. Maybe it’ll make you feel better.”
She rolled her eyes. “I don’t think I could feel worse.”
